Eight receive jail terms for role in killing Iranian security force in 2022

Karaj, IRNA – Eight people have received prison sentences of up to 15 years for their role in killing an Iranian security force during riots that erupted in the country last year, according to the top judicial official in Iran's northern province of Alborz, Hossein Fazeli Harikandi.

Harikandi said on Wednesday that the sentences had been given in relation to the role of convicts in killing of Ruhollah Ajamian, a member of the Basiji (volunteer forces), who was killed on November 3, 2022 during riots in Karaj, a city located 40 kilometers west of Tehran.

He said Hamid Ghare-Hassanlou, 53, received fifteen years of prison in exile while Reza Aria, Hossein Mohammadi, and Mehdi Mohammadi were each sentenced to ten years of in exile over their role in then killing. 

Mohammad Amin Akhlaghi, Amin Mehdi Shokrollahi, and Farzaneh Ghare-Hassanlou were each given five-year sentences in exile. Ali Moazzami Goudarzi received the lightest sentence of three years of prison in exile.

The main culprits behind Ajamian's death were Mohammad Mehdi Karami, 22, and Mohammad Hosseini, 39, who were both executed on January 7, 2023.
